On January 22, 2022, our Provincial Superior, Father Lane Akiona, ss.cc., along with our Sacred Hearts Brothers, had an opportunity to join Bishop Larry Silva of the Diocese of Honolulu, in celebrating the Feast of Saint Marianne Cope at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu, Hawaii.

In 1883, Saint Marianne Cope of the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse, New York joined Father Damien to help care for persons suffering Hansen's Disease (leprosy) on the island of Moloka'i in Hawai'i. As Father Damien's health deteriorated, Saint Marianne took care of him until he died on April 15, 1889.

Even though her legacy is not talked about outside of Hawaii, her steadfast commitment in helping those who are outcasted by society continues to live on.

"I am hungry for work and I wish with all my heart to be one of the chosen Ones, whose privilege it will be, to sacrifice themselves for the salvation of the souls of the poor Islanders...I am not afraid of any disease, hence it would be my greatest delight even to minister to the abandoned lepers." - Saint Marianne Cope
