SS.CC. U.S Province - 4th Provincial Chapter - “Looking to the future with hope”

Chapter Delegates in Hawaii The U.S. Province celebrated its 4th Provincial Chapter from June 20-25, 2021. The Chapter took place in St. Anthony Retreat Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. It was facilitated by Fr. Martin O’Loughlen, ss.cc. There were 20 members of the Chapter: 12 delegates elected from the Province 1 delegate from the US West Region 1 delegate from the Region of India and six ex-officio members (the Provincial Council and Regional Superiors). Fr. Derek Laverty, ss.cc. represented the General Government. SS.CC. Sisters Regina Mary Jenkins and Helene Wood were invitees. Fr. Derek Laverty and Fr. Alexis Nayak (delegate of India) participated via Zoom, all others were there in person.

Celebration new council The first two days were dedicated to the presentation of various reports from the Provincial, the Regions of India and US West, Development, the Archives, Initial Formation and Finances. After the reports the second day was dedicated to a presentation and discussion of a number of proposals for the Chapter to consider.

These proposals had been prioritized from the themes and proposals that surfaced in the discussions of the area communities during the Chapter preparation process. Discussions took place in small groups and in plenary sessions. They had been distilled into eight proposals: Communication, Finance, Development, 2 on Ongoing Formation, Initial Formation, Vocations and Mission.



Day three was election day for the new provincial government. Fr. Lane Akiona was elected Provincial Superior, Fr. Robert Charlton, Vice-Provincial, Fr. Stephen Banjare, 1st Councilor, Fr. Edward Popish, 2nd Councilor, and Fr. Richard Danyluk, 3rd Councilor. Brothers and sisters gathered to celebrate the new leadership team with a gaudeamus and dinner.

Day four of the Chapter continued with discussion of the proposals, revising and fine-tuning them in preparation for voting on them. In addition some fresh proposals were presented to the Chapter. These included: changes to Provincial Election procedures, the development of Enthronement of the Sacred Heart ministry and a proposal of a Province-wide commitment to a year of prayer and fasting as a way of making reparation for the harm some brothers have caused to others. All proposals were passed. In the evening the Chapter and other invited guests celebrated Fr. Martin O’Loghlen’s 60th anniversary of ordination.

The last day of the Chapter began with a reflection from Sisters Regina Mary and Helene. They presented memories of the various collaborations between the brothers and sisters over the years. Then, as the new Provincial, Fr. Lane had an opportunity to address the chapter. After all of the delegates were given the opportunity to evaluate the Chapter. In all, it was an upbeat and positive evaluation. The Chapter adjourned and we finished the morning with Mass, at which Fr. Lane presided.
