Priestly Ordination of Deacons Eric Cruz, ss.cc. and John Sawchenko, ss.cc.

On January 14, 2023, Deacon Eric Mesa Cruz, ss.cc. and Deacon John Francis Sawchenko, ss.cc. were ordained to the priesthood at Holy Name of Mary Parish in San Dimas, California in the presence of their ss.cc. brothers, family friends and a multitude of parishioners of Holy Name Parish who filled the large church.

The principal celebrant of the mass and ordaining prelate was the Most Reverend David G. O’Connell, Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles, San Gabriel Region. The principal concelebrants were the Most Reverend Lane Akiona, ss.cc, Provincial of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts United States Province, and Reverend Christopher Santangelo, ss.cc. Pastor of Holy Name of Mary Parish. Concelebrants were many of their SS.CC. brother priests and invited priests.

In his homily Bishop O’Connell asked Eric and John them to unite themselves to Jesus in his suffering to bring his compassion to the world. For, making his compassion and mercy present in the world is central to the mystery of the priesthood. It is what will bring change to the world. He invited them to be drawn into walking with the Lord Jesus to help in this great mystery of exchange where Jesus takes all our suffering on himself and gives compassion and mercy. Bishop O’Connell told them that a deep friendship with Jesus is important for them, abiding in that friendship that they might bear much fruit. He also invited them to stay close to our Blessed Mother, who loved them and was filled with joy this day.

After the mass, the celebration continued with a delicious meal served in the parish hall, to which all were invited.
