| Background: I am Mathieu Vaitulukina, originally from the islands of Wallis (Uvea) and Futuna. I was born in Wallis and raised in Futuna. My father is from Futuna, and my mother is from Wallis. I am the elder of two brothers, and I am grateful that my family taught me how to pray and give praise to God. Growing up, I traveled back and forth between the two islands. During the summertime I visited my mother’s family in Wallis, and when school resumed I returned to Futuna for my studies. Later, I went to New Caledonia, a Melanesian country and a French territory, like Wallis and Futuna. When did you first think that God might be calling you to be a priest? I first felt that calling when I was with my father’s aunt after our family prayer. She told me that one day I would go in a direction that none of my family had ever imagined. At the time, I took it as a joke and did not pay much attention to it. Looking back now, I realize that the seed of that calling had already been planted in me, especially through my grandparents, although I was not aware of it then. I became more certain that God might be calling me when I began working with the youth—assisting in their programs and helping during Sunday Mass and feast day celebrations. Why did you choose the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts? There are two reasons why I chose this congregation. The first was the habit. When I saw Rev. Fr. Esitio Niuliki wearing it at the ordination of an MSC priest, I was immediately drawn to it because it was the first time I had seen a habit like that. The second reason was the hospitality I experienced in Fiji. It reminded me of my grandmother’s words: “Be kind and hospitable, and the grace you receive will be more than you ever expected.” Later, I learned more about the congregation when I moved to Hemet and saw the works and missions the congregation had carried out in Hawai‘i. Finally, I was deeply attracted to its charism: to contemplate, live, and proclaim God’s love. Favorite hobbies and/or fun fact about yourself: I love playing the guitar, helping the choir, and composing hymns and songs. I enjoy encouraging people to build their confidence in singing and playing instruments. Another thing I love is interacting with people. It gives me energy and courage to keep moving forward. Favorite Bible passage: James 5:7 “Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.” Your favorite saint: My favorite saint is Peter Chanel, a member of the Society of Mary. He is the first saint of Futuna and the patron saint of Oceania. His last words were: “My death is nothing but good for me.” He also said, “It is good for me that Futuna may live.” The people recognized him as “the man with the kind heart.” I am amazed that my island of Futuna has a saint, and I am proud of it. He blessed my island with his life, and through his witness many people were converted to Christianity. |
